South Sudan

Occupying a central position in East Africa, South Sudan is a young nation known for its vast landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The Nile River, the world’s longest, snakes through the country, providing a vital source of water and supporting agriculture. South Sudan boasts diverse ecosystems, encompassing sprawling plains, the Sudd swamp – a vast papyrus marsh – and highlands in the southeast. The population is comprised of numerous ethnic groups, each with its own distinct customs and languages.

Following decades of civil war, South Sudan gained independence in 2011. Despite the challenges of political instability and infrastructure development, the country is striving for peace and economic development. South Sudan’s economy relates to agriculture (particularly sorghum and sesame), oil production, and livestock herding. The country faces challenges of poverty and food insecurity. However, there are efforts underway to improve social welfare and build a more sustainable future.
