Maldives to ban Israelis from entering country amid war in Gaza

June 2, 2024: In response to ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Maldives announced a prohibition against Israeli passport holders entering the country. The decision was communicated via a press release from the office of Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on June 2, 2024. This measure, recommended by the presidential cabinet, will involve amendments to national laws and the formation of a subcommittee to manage the implementation.

In light of this development, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Israeli nationals to reconsider travel to the Maldives and suggested that those currently in the country should plan their departure, citing potential difficulties in providing consular assistance in distress situations.

This announcement follows a recent incident where President Muizzu criticized an Israeli airstrike in Rafah, which resulted in significant Palestinian casualties. Additionally, President Muizzu has expressed solidarity with Palestine through various initiatives, including appointing a special envoy to assess Palestinian needs and organizing a fundraising event with UNRWA. He has also planned a nationwide rally under the slogan “Falastheenaa Eku Dhivehin,” which translates to “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine.”
