Japan, officially known as Nippon or Nihon, and formally as the State of Japan, is an island country in East Asia, located in the northwest Pacific Ocean. It is bordered on the west by the Sea of Japan, and extends from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north toward the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. Japan is composed of an archipelago of 6,852 islands, the largest of which are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Tokyo, the capital, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, known for its towering skyscrapers and pop culture. Japan is a global leader in technology and innovation, and its economy is the third-largest in the world by nominal GDP. The country’s culture blends its ancient traditions with aspects of Western life, reflected in its arts, cuisine, and societal practices. Despite its many urbanized areas, Japan also offers scenic landscapes of mountains, forests, and coastlines.
