Chongqing

Chongqing is a major city in southwest China and one of the country’s four municipalities directly controlled by the central government. Known for its dramatic terrain, the city is set amidst the convergence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers and is characterized by its hilly landscapes and dense fog, earning it the nickname “Fog City.” Chongqing has a rich historical background, serving as China’s wartime capital during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Today, it is an important economic center in the region, with industries ranging from car manufacturing to technology. The city is also noted for its culinary scene, especially its hot and spicy Sichuan cuisine. Chongqing’s cultural heritage is highlighted in its numerous museums and traditional hot springs, and it serves as a departure point for scenic river cruises down the Yangtze toward the Three Gorges Dam.
