Cameroon is a country in Central Africa, bordered by Nigeria to the west and north, Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the south. Its coastline lies on the Bight of Biafra, part of the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. The capital city is Yaoundé, while the largest city and economic hub is Douala. Known as “Africa in miniature,” Cameroon boasts a diverse range of climates and ecological systems, from tropical rainforests to arid plains, mountains, deserts, and beaches.
This diversity extends to its cultural life as well, with Cameroon comprising over 250 distinct ethnic groups and an equally varied linguistic palette, including English and French as official languages. The nation’s economy is among the more diversified in sub-Saharan Africa, with agriculture, mining, petroleum, and timber as major sectors. Cameroon’s music, particularly Makossa and Bikutsi, are popular nationally and have influenced African music scenes globally. Despite its natural and cultural wealth, Cameroon faces challenges such as political tension, particularly concerning linguistic and ethnic disparities, and economic inequality.
